Violin concerto by Sir Harrison Birtwistle receives its world premiere.

It is performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, associate conductor Marcello Lehninger conducting, at Symphony Hall. The performance features violinist Christian Tetzlaff. Lehninger conducts due to the health problems of music director James Levine.
